Google to launch own processor for upcoming Pixel

Alphabet Inc’s Google has announced that it will employ processors that are designed in-house for its Pixel phones, launching following this fall, in a shift away from Qualcomm Inc’s technology that has powered the search giant’s Android devices for over 15 years.

The processor, named Tensor, will be powering the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones, Google stated in a blog post, with the company planning to reveal further details closer to the release.

Shares of Qualcomm, the world’s biggest producer of smartphone wireless chips, were down marginally in afternoon trading.

Google stated that the next Pixel phone, 5a, would still possess a Qualcomm processor.

“We will still work closely with Google on existing and forthcoming products based on Snapdragon platforms,” a spokesperson from Qualcomm stated in a statement.

Last year, Apple Inc began using its central processor intended for Macs, a step away from chipmaker Intel Corp.
