We’ve compiled a list of the top 13 Korean web series to watch in 2024 as yet another spectacular year comes to a close.

1. DESERTER PURSUIT (D.P):

This is a fan favourite Korean drama that has been available on Netflix since 2021. D.P’s plot revolves around a young private on a mission to apprehend army deserters, revealing the unpleasant reality that enlistees face during their mandatory calls to duty. 

The show has received great accolades from viewers and reviewers for its plot-driven narrative and characters, will return with a new season in the spring of 2023.

2. A TIME CALLED YOU:

Based on the Taiwanese drama Someday or One Day, the K-drama series follows Jun-hee in her grief for her late boyfriend Yeun-jun, who died a few years ago. She inexplicably returns to 1998, where she was a high school student called Kwon Min-joo, one day. 

As luck would have it, her late boyfriend’s likeness can be seen in Si-heon, the most popular boy in school. As In-gyu, his best buddy, falls for Min-joo, the situation becomes more complicated.

3. MASK GIRL:

With an estimated 7 episodes, this K-Drama is one of the most anticipated ones. It centres on Mo-Mi, a regular office worker with a severe inferiority problem over her appearance. She does, however, host an internet show while wearing a mask and is proud of her lovely body. 

One of her coworkers, Joo-Oh, has a thing for the girl in the mask. He becomes entangled in the web of dramatic occurrences as she becomes involved. And after he disappears, Kyung-ja, his lone parent, launches a desperate quest.

4. THE GIRL DOWNSTAIRS:

On his first day of college, freshman Won-joon moves into a new apartment only to discover that his downstairs neighbour Doo-na is a former celebrity who gave up her career to further her education. But against his will, he starts to fall for her. This newly released K-Drama boasts an incredible cast and is based on the webcomic Lee Doona.

5. VIGILANTE:

Based on action-crime genere, Vigilante centres on Kim Ji-yong, a police academy student. At a young age, he witnesses his mother being murdered by known gangsters and swears to exact revenge. He establishes an illegal organisation, turns vigilante, and murders lawbreakers as the Metropolitan Investigation Unit Team pursues him.

6. THE UNCANNY COUNTER 2:

This 2023 supernatural Korean drama series depicts a group of daytime noodle store employees and nighttime demon hunters. Mun, a young high school student who is 18 years old, lost both of his parents when he was a child due to a car accident. 

He discovers the Counters one day, and after a series of weird events, the spirit of one Counter enters him and bestows extraordinary skills. So Mun and the other Counters must breach the rules and band together to protect themselves against a potent evil force.

7. GYEONGSEONG CREATURE:

The series is set in 1945 Gyeongseong (the former name for Seoul) and follows a couple of city dwellers who meet wicked creatures spawned of avarice. It features a fantastic cast and is one of the most anticipated K-dramas of 2023. 

Even before the first season has begun, a second season has already been confirmed due to the show’s overwhelming popularity and impact.

8. KILL BOK-SOON:

Killer Bok-soon struggles to manage his business and personal life, especially because he has a daughter who is 15 years old. The corporation Bok-soon works for appoints Min-gyu as its new CEO. 

He is the one who gave her all the training necessary for the trade, making Bok-soon the most feared assassin in the area. The key topics of this Korean film are maintaining a parallel life, interpersonal interactions, and corporate rivalry.

9. THE ROUNDUP: NO WAY OUT:

The Roundup: No Way Out is a sequel to Lee’s 2022 action film The Roundup and sees Don Lee reprise his role as the beefed-up tough officer as he joins forces with the Regional Investigation Unit to take down legendary Japanese Yazuka gangsters while they wreak havoc in Korea.

10. QUEEN MAKER:

Queen Maker, one of the most anticipated Netflix original Korean dramas of 2023, centres on two strong, headstrong women who disagree on methods and viewpoints but band together to fight for justice. 

Do-hee is a dependable strategic planning team manager at the Eunsung Group who manages challenging situations and looks out for public opinion. Seung-sook is running for mayor to bring justice to the people and is opposed to the Eunsung Group. It will be fascinating to see what transpires when these two faces up.

11. ALCHEMY OF SOULS: LIGHT AND SHADOW

In the nation of Daeho, Jang Wook of the noble Jang family harbours an embarrassing birth secret that the entire population of the nation debates. 

As a well-known troublemaker, Jang Wook meets Mu Deok, an elite warrior stuck in a frail body who yet accepts his servitude and secretly starts teaching Jang Wook how to fight. 

Alchemy of Souls has a tonne of promise for a new season given the show’s ferociously high popularity and ratings. Even with ten fewer episodes, part 2 could surpass the ratings of part 1 in terms of popularity.

12. SQUID GAME 2:

The season 2 trailer for this cult favourite show was sufficient to generate anticipation despite the lack of a fixed release date. 

For those who don’t know the plot: Gi-hun, a divorced father who spent years working at an auto industry before being laid off, tried to start his own business but failed, and is now living with his elderly mother while working as a chauffeur, is the protagonist of the story. 

He even steals money from his mother, who works at a market stand, in order to fund his gambling, resulting in a significant debt. Due to his desperation, he becomes a target for a mysterious organisation that promises him the possibility to win a significant sum of money, ultimately $38 million USD, by participating in a series of games with other players.

13. HELLBOUND:

A supernatural figure known as an angel unexpectedly appears to give decrees, which send certain people to Hell at a specific future period, which could be seconds from now or years from now. 

In a stunning display of force known as a demonstration, three gigantic supernatural beasts come at nearly the same time to maul and incinerate the person’s body. 

The New Truth Society, a cult, and the Arrowhead group, a gang, both works together to obtain power by exploiting the fears of the populace. The show aired on 2021 and can be a good watch for fantasy lovers.
