India is the oldest civilization that has ever existed when it comes to humankind.  India is a country of religions, rich cultures, and the cradle of numerous traditions and religions. Temples, also referred to as “Mandirs,” are highly revered in Hinduism. It is a place of worship and prayer for the local populace. As a result, several artistic temples have been built throughout the nation, practically everywhere. Nearly every temple is surrounded by a variety of history or, to put it more accurately, mysteries. In the following post, we will be featuring a list of the top 10 famous temples in India.

Famous Temples in India

1. Somnath Temple, Gujarat

It is among the most well-known places for pilgrimages. Since it claims to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas—holy sites in India supposed to be the locations of Lord Shiva’s manifestation—Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple is greatly adored by devotees of Lord Shiva. This temple is mentioned in several works of ancient literature, including the Rigveda, the Shivpuran, and the Shreemad Bhagavat. The temple is well-regarded by people across India making it one of the famous temples in India.

2. Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi

The Vishvanath Temple is one of the most popular Hindu shrines to Lord Shiva. The current structure was constructed in an adjacent location around 1780 by the Maratha ruler Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. It houses one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples. The temple had a recent renovation by the government of India and the state of Uttar Pradesh.

3. Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Kerala

As claimed by many devotees, the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple has allegedly been in existence for 5000 years. This temple serves as one among the 108 Divya Desams. According to Vaishnavism’s dharma, the temple is devoted to Lord Padmanabha, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, and is one of the primary sites for Vaishnava devotion. There is a deep emphasis on the history of the temple in Bhagwad Gita, further fortifying its significance.

4. Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri

Odisha is the home of both the renowned Jagannath Temple in Puri and Lord Jagannath. The temple is one among the char dham sites of pilgrimage. During the annual Ratha Yatra celebration at the Puri temple, the three principal deities are hauled atop large, elaborately decorated temple vehicles.

5. The Dwarkadhish temple, Dwarka

The Dawarladish temple, sometimes referred to as Jagat Mandir, is in the city of Dwarka and is dedicated to Krishna, who is revered there as the “King of Dwarka,” or Dwarkadhish. The main shrine of the 72-pillared, five-story structure is known as Jagat Mandir or Nija Mandir. Archaeological finds suggest that the original temple was probably built 2,200 years ago. Its prominence among people makes it one of the famous temples in India.

6. Kedarnath Temple, Kedarnath

The Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in the Rudraprayag area of Uttarakhand. Its relevance is made clearer as The Skanda Purana makes one of the first references to Kedarnath, describing Kedara (Kedarnath) as the location where Lord Shiva released the Ganges River’s holy waters from his matted locks.

7. Badrinath Temple, Uttarakhand

As a sacred site for Hindu worshippers, Badrinath Temple acts as one of the stops on the char Dham jatra. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have discovered a black Shaligram stone statue of Lord Badrinarayan in the Alaknanda River. He originally hid it in a cave not far from the hot springs of Tapt Kund. In the sixteenth century, the King of Garhwal moved the murti to what is now the temple.

8. Shree Siddhivinayak Ganpati Temple, Mumbai

People worship Shree Ganesh given that he eliminates obstacles before beginning any new business or attempt to do so. Dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is revered and well-recognized by people across the country. It was initially built on November 19, 1801, by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil. The temple is counted among the wealthiest pilgrimage sites in India.

9. Swaminarayan Akshardham, New Delhi

The word “Akshardham” alludes to the celestial residence of God. This campus of Hindu temples and spiritual and cultural centres is one of the most well-known heritage monuments in the capital of India. In the presence of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Manmohan Singh, L. K. Advani, and B. L. Joshi, Pramukh Swami Maharaj officially inaugurated the temple on November 6, 2005. The main temple of the compound was built utilising Vastu shastra and Pancharatra principles.

10. Vaishno Devi Temple, Jammu & Kashmir

The Vaishno Devi Temple, often referred to as the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple and the Vaishno Devi Bhavan, is a well-known and prestigious Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Vaishno Devi. Vaishno Devi is seen by Hindus as an incarnation of Kali, Saraswati, and Lakshmi with the predominant attribute of Durga. The temple honours Devi Durga and is one of the 108 shakti Peethas.

Conclusion

That concludes our list of the top 10 famous temples in India. However, these aren’t India’s only well-known temples. There are other further revered temples, including Shri Kashi Biswanath, Lingaraja, Khajuraho, Konark Sun, and Ramanathaswamy. Even while the histories of each temple are somewhat different, they all share the fact that they were destinations where people looked for tranquilly.

If you are a fan of culture and history, you might want to plan a trip to any of these temples. The experience will be divine and can help you find new direction in life.
