Fear Not? Or Fear Yes? The Fall of America?

April 10, 2023 — This short article is not about the likely Fall of America from alleged widespread political corruption and loss of overall social values. Political and social pundits have these to write and talk about. My role here is to educate us briefly on the Fall of the Roman Empire, not from conquest by vicious enemies who are combatants but from microscopic enemies. My hope is this will give us insights into America’s possible fate.

Rome largely fell, at least its Eastern stronghold did, not from politics and debauchery but from precisely that of which I speak: an infectious disease. This disease is commonly known as the Bubonic Plague. At the time, It was called the Justinian Plague, named for Rome’s Emperor. But it should have been called the World Plague. It is so far the worst apocalypse to hit the world.

This apocalypse was one of the most devastating disasters in the history of the world. And it not only can happen again, I believe it will happen again. Those who do not prepare themselves will be at the mercy not only of nature but also of our mortal enemies, including disease-bearing terrorists and hostile nations.

In the case of the Roman Empire, the spread was quick, broad, deep, enormous, recurring, and deadly. People died on the streets and in their homes at such an explosive rate that loved ones and neighbors postponed their burials for days or weeks. When eventually buried, most were buried in mass graves or out to sea.

This World Pandemic hit the then-powerful Eastern Empire, the Justinian Roman Empire, starting in 527 AD. And then it regularly represented itself repeatedly for most of the next 40-some years. Finally, it only subsided in 565 AD. By then, the Romans were quite literally on their knees.

Even Emperor Justinian was stricken. This event should give senior US leaders (and senior leaders of our allies) of enterprises and state and federal governments pause and food for thought. We are not only speaking of rank-and-file employees and their families who are at risk. Even executives are. Everyone is. So, we are all in this together. We are a team faced with a common significant risk. And so, isn’t it time to identify what needs to be done and deal with it?

Because this Pandemic weakened it, the Gothic king Totila could sack Rome in 546 AD. This sacking shook the Empire to its core. The Pandemic hit Asian cities hard too. But this article is only about the possible fall of the Roman Empire’s equivalent, the United States of America, significantly produced by the same means: one or more highly potent infectious diseases that have the capacity to spread like wildfire.

Trusted historians now estimate that 50% or more of the populations of some heavily populated Roman cities or regions, such as Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey, and the Port of Alexandria, the largest port in Egypt at the time, were killed. And the Pandemic did more than kill. It significantly otherwise harmed (physically, mentally, psychologically, emotionally, and financially) countless millions of others.

Respected historians believe that around the world, 100M (perhaps as many as half of the world’s population at the time) died. But, again, the Pandemic significantly otherwise harmed tens of millions more. The disease impacted nearly everyone in the world directly or indirectly. So, the Pandemic was an apocalypse of monumental proportions. And this spread of the disease was not intentional. Just think about what would have happened if it had been.

Think of the increased danger if malevolent humans, by reckless or intentional behavior, accelerate the pace, scale, and viciousness of the attack, again, again, and again. And just think if the next Pandemic were worse. (No matter how much we wish there wouldn’t be, there is always a next Pandemic.) What if it involved a far more contagious and deadly artificial variant of an already highly infectious and fatal disease?

But this cannot happen to America, right? Or among our allies, right? Having so many reckless scientists and cruel terrorist and nation-state adversaries around the globe means, I believe, it can. And I think the risk is at least 10x greater.

For my further thoughts on the type and level of the risk, please see my recent article titled “A National Security Concern? 10,000 Infected Balloons Over America!” published on February 9, 2023. It is available at https://www.linkedin.com/post/edit/7029513940648783874/?author=urn:li:fs_miniProfile:ACoAAAAnDosBUqg-r8JR_XpwS0USV4r6dGC7KyI.)

So:

Do you want to protect yourself?

Do you want to protect your enterprise?

Do you want to protect your family?

Do you want to protect your coworkers?

If so, please open, complete, and submit the important “market survey” attached below. You will be glad you did. And if you do, we will share the results with you so you can see what your colleagues and competitors are doing right now to prepare themselves for the next Pandemic and the next.

The brief survey is at Safely2Prosperity Market Survey (anvilor.com).
